Capitol Hill

This neighborhood is a very special place with blocks and blocks of charm punctuated by narrow and often steep streets. This lovely little area is the oldest-surviving neighborhood in Salt Lake City. Capitol Hill combines a variety of architectural styles including Greek Revival, Federal, Queen Anne, Beaux-Arts and Victorian classic. Building in this district began in the 1850s and continued until the 1930s. Many of these beautiful homes fell into disrepair after World War II. The neighborhood has regained its dignity, and many of the older homes have been restored. Quite a few structures are on the National Register of Historic Places. The community has four sub-neighborhoods: City Creek in the canyons east of the Capitol building, the Marmalade district to the west, Wasatch Springs to the north, and Heber’s Bench just below the Capitol to the south. Watching the sunset is a great pastime here.
